Delayed Cord Clamping, Placenta Pills and a Water Birth Oh My!!

31 weeks + 4days .... Almost 8 months along!
Dress from Harrods by T-Bags Los Angeles, 24" clip in extensions by www.MilaniHair.com

Ok, so Im just going to go there!
Despite what I'm sure many may have thought, I actually want to go as natural as I can for the birth of my son. I'm sure people assumed Id be one of those girls who goes in for a scheduled C-section and then gets a tummy tuck right after. The truth is however, my maternal instincts are pulling me towards a Water Birth/ Natural Birth, Delayed Cord Clamping and having my placenta encapsulated in the Raw form  after I give birth as well as drinking a placenta smoothie asap after I have delivered... !
"WTF" is probably what you're thinking, but read on to see why and what its all about.

** While I do want to try and deliver my child without the interference of drugs, I would like to say that I still feel more comfortable delivering in a hospital rather than a home birth; I feel its safer in case of emergency and gives me peace of mind. But, I want to make my hospital delivery as natural, peaceful and drug free as I can however I am keeping an open mind to other options incase of emergency or things not going as planned.

Lets first start off talking about Delayed Cord Clamping-
"The benefits of delaying umbilical cord clamping and leaving the cord attached to your baby until it is completely drained of nutrient rich blood are now becoming known again. It usually takes 5-60 minutes for the cord to stop pulsing; until then the cord should not be clamped or cut unless there is an emergency. During the pulsing stage, the placenta is still providing your baby with up to 150ml of iron and oxygen rich blood that is plentiful in important post-birth hormones, stem cells and T cells and other vitamins, minerals and nutrients.  Placental hormones are known to help facilitate the mother/baby bonding process in the weeks after birth.  Delaying in cord clamping has also been scientifically linked to higher iron levels in infants at 6 months of age. "

I dont see myself waiting 1 hour after the birth to cut the cord- but I would like to wait as long as I can and refrain from clamping and cutting the cord right away to benefit my baby. (5-10 minutes)
I spoke to my Dr about it and asked him about the benefits and if there were any negatives to doing this. He mentioned that the baby can get Jaundice- which is a yellow color of the skin, mucus membranes, or eyes but nothing is proven. For me- the benefits outweigh the negatives so I asked if I could just delay the clamping a bit and he said "as long as there are no complications and so on- of course". So this is what I am planning to do first and foremost.

Watch this video to learn more- I found it very interesting.

Water Birth/ Natural Birth-
So many of you have told me in comments and on my social media pages to watch the movie "The Business of Being Born" which I rented on itunes and watched. I was so inspired by the water birth and being able to walk around and move freely and listening to my body during labor that Im strongly considering having a water birthing pool as an option in my room at the hospital.. I LOVE love love the idea of a home water birth but here in London where I will be having the baby, the traffic, distance and the fear of a possible emergency / what if moment makes me feel more comfortable for my first time especially, giving birth in a hospital. I want to use my Dr vs switching now to a birthing center so I am going to ask if I can arrange to have natural birthing tools such as a birthing ball, mats, a birthing stool and a birthing pool in my private room. I dont know if a birthing pool will fit in the delivery room, but the room does have a bath and shower and huge bathroom so I could use that to labor in but I am going to try to labor home in my own bath for as long as I can before heading to the hospital. All of the other tools I know they have access to and wont be a problem bringing to the room.

*Update*- Unfortunately there is no room in the birthing rooms and my Dr told me he has never done a water birth, which was fine with me as I really just wanted to be able to relax in the warm water and be able to move freely in my room while Im laboring and possibly even give birth in a "non traditional" position if thats what I feel my body wants to do- i.e.: squatting, standing, whatever feels right. They do have birthing balls there which I was happy to see and all the midwives who work in the birthing area were so nice and understood my want to go as natural as possible, they made me feel really comfortable and at home.

Placenta Encapsulation- The RAW way!
I have been thinking about having my placenta encapsulated since the day I found out I was pregnant. I don't remember where or how I heard about it- I think possibly a friend joking about placenta smoothies but I became completely fascinated by the idea.  Ive been doing research and reading up about it and found there to be so many benefits. It sounds disgusting and all of my friends who I told I may do this FREAKED out telling me I was crazy, BUT, for some reason I really want to do this.   I then found the UK site call IPEN ( IPEN is a UK based International Network of placenta encapsulation experts dedicated to 'new mother' health and support), watched a few videos and decided this was for me.  I asked my Dr if any of his patients have done this and he said one lady from another country took the placenta home, cooked it and ate it. To me, cooking the placenta would defeat the purpose, kind of like the raw food diet theory, once its cooked over a certain degree it starts to kill off all of the nutrients, hormones and vitamins- so whats the point. I am going to have my placenta prepared like a Raw food restaurant would "cook" food- by dehydrating it. Its then turned into a powder and put into capsules that can be consumed. This definitely isn't for everyone, but I guess Im a lot more "au naturel" than many would have thought.

After going on the IPEN website I contacted a few placenta encapsulation specialist and chose one that felt right to me.
How Much Does It All Cost and how does it all work?-
The lady Im using will be preparing my placenta at my own home. Most do it at their own houses and then hand deliver the pills to you, but I just feel more comfortable having it done in my own home for an additional cost.
-How its prepared- " it takes aprox. 1 hour to prepare the placenta before dehydrating and once it is in the dehydrator it needs to be there for aprox. 16 -20 hours, after that it takes another couple of hours maximum to encapsulate, depending on the size of the Placenta."
-How much does it cost- "my usual fee of 150pounds for the dehydrating process but would ask for the delivery by hand fee which is 55pounds on top of that" - which works out to be about $307.50 but each person has a different rate.

Placenta Smoothie-
In the last couple of weeks I started to think, well maybe I want to have a placenta smoothie as well- dont ask why. So I looked up what it was all about and asked my Placenta Encapsulation lady about it.
"The raw placenta is known for its high contents of stem cells and growth factors which together heal damaged tissue and organs at a very incredible rate.  Consuming the placenta raw is the most natural and benefitial way to benefit from your placenta after birth."

Benefits of Raw placenta smoothie:
  • Helps stop post partum haemorrhaging and trigger the body to quickly heal internal wounds
  • Significantly reduces blood loss
  • Gives the body an immediate supply of essential vitamins and nutrients
  • Provides the body with an immediate boost of hormones to begin healing the body after birth
  • Gives the mother an immediate feeling of strength and balance
  • Most mothers who have the smoothie report milk ‘comes in’ at day 2 post-partum rather than3-4 days post-partum
  • Eases the hormonal transition to post-partum and helps prevent the ‘baby blues’ around thetime when milk engorges the breasts

What my lady had to say about it-  "We can prepare the smoothie for you in the hospital, at home or I can prepare it at home and bring it to you, for this we will need some berries, honey and a throw away blender. The smoothie is best to have as soon as possible but within 12-16 hours is ok too. I havn't tasted one but everyone says the smoothies are yummy and taste a little earthy. Its good to remember that I only put in about a 50 pence (silver dollar ) piece size of placenta in and then you have lots of berries and banana, honey etc which is also just what you need at that point."

Doesn't sound so bad... Think Ill go ahead and try this and blog about it after :) Wish me luck.

Some Things On My Birth Plan-
A few other things I have added to my birth plan.
-After the baby is born (providing its done vaginally) I dont want the baby cleaned up or his umbilical cord clamped- I want him placed on my chest right away where I will wait a bit to A. Bond and B. wait for the cord to stop pulsing as much/ drain out naturally. I have read that its best for the Dr's not to wipe the baby down right away because that is his protective layer and assists in his natural instinct to breastfeed.
-Id like for the baby to stay in my room at all times
-I want to avoid a C-section unless an emergency
-Id like to avoid any induction drugs
-I wish to breastfeed exclusively (for 1 year is my plan)
-I only want my husband and I in the room for the birth of our first child together.
-We do plan on circumcising our son
-I may or may not bank whats left of his cord blood and stem cells.

I hope you get inspired and do your research. There is no right or wrong when it comes to these kinds of decision, just follow your heart and do what feels right for you.
Please share your stories in the comments below. Id love to hear about your experiences.

My Baby Shower Inspiration

YAY! I can't believe it's almost that time to have a baby shower. Since I'm living in London for the year my shower is not a surprise and Ive helped out where I can.  Most of you know by now that Im having a baby boy and Alki and I have decided to name him Nikola aka Niko after my father since Alki's first son is already named after his father- Andrew.
Im very into the whole "baby" theme. I love all baby colors, baby blues, creams, lambs, bears etc. To me, you dont have the baby stage forever, and from what I hear it goes rather quickly, so I want him to be baby before he is anything else.
I was very specific about how I wanted my baby shower invites, so I did some research and found this lady who makes all different kinds of invites, thank you cards and so on, all by hand. I sent her an email with my idea and for $20.00 she made my custom sample. I didnt love the first so I wrote her back with some changes and she made them without hesitation and together we came up with my dream baby shower invite.

My custom Diaper inspired baby shower invitation with a crown on the front and Niko's name printed on it.
" A Little Prince is on the way!"

My invites were custom made by - HandMade By Odette LLC at http://www.handmadebyodette.com/blog/ .
Odette makes truly AMAZING invitations, I will forever use her for special events. The quality is amazing and her company is such a gem!! Check out her blog and view all her different invites and all the things she has made.
My invites came in matching blue envelopes and Odette printed all of my guests addressed with the same ink color and font as my name from inside the invitation. It was important for me that everything matched and Odette nailed that completely.

For my shower my mom decided for my centerpieces she wanted us to make diaper cakes.  She went to Costco and bought a huge box of real diapers and then we went to Michaels craft store and bought fake flowers and all kinds of different ribbon. While I was in NY visiting my family and friends, my mom and I spent one afternoon making our cakes. I decided I wanted mine to be a rubber duck diaper cake while my mom chose to do more floral cakes. This was such a  fun project to do together and gave us the crafty, creative fix we both needed.

Baby Shower Inspiration:
Obviously in Boy colors. But I love this diaper cake.

I Love the crown on top of this diaper cake.

When I'm back in London Ill take pictures of Niko's nursery as it gets closer to being done and do a post on where everything is from.

My Recent Maternity Photoshoot

In my last post I mentioned that I was going to do a maternity photoshoot now and then again later when I was further along because how you're going to look and feel is not promised as your prgnancy progresses. Well,  a few weeks ago I shot at Venture Studios in Knightsbridge UK with my husband and then did a bunch on my own.  My photographers name  was Jennifer, ironic- and she was amazing. She made us feel so comfortable and had some great ideas that we bounced off each other to create what I think are some of the best maternity pics I have ever seen... and I'm not just saying that because their mine LOL.  Venture Studios is a great company BUT, I must say I wasnt happy with the packages they offered after the shoot and I should have done my homework and looked into it further before I decided to shoot. Heres why-
As a studio they are amazing. Their equipment is state-of-the-art, they are all knowledgeable of the different lighting techniques and so on...The outcome was AMAZING but when you want prints of the gorgeous pictures you just took, you can ONLY choose their frames- which none of them I liked. They do not offer you just plain prints in any size you want that you can take home and frame yourself  and to get all of my beloved images on a USB to have for years to come I had to pay 2400.00 pounds- which is $3,604.00 on top of the approx $400 I paid for the shoot. The shoot which is a great price at $400 for 2 full hours also came with  a free session to return once baby Niko is here... I probably wont be going back. To me, having to pay additional for pictures of ME that I feel I should have rightfully owned was BS. AND, the images on the USB can only be blown up to about 5x7"... So to say Im completely satisfied who be a lie.. I AM completely satisfied with how the images of ME came out, but everything else was a let down....

Back to my shoot- So this shoot was also the first time in my entire life that I shot nude- EVER! And I must say I never felt more beautiful or comfortable in my own skin. Theres just something, to me anyway, that makes you feel completely beautiful. Sure Ive gained weight and my boobs are huge and everything is bigger- arms, thighs, BUTT, boobs and belly, but I never truly felt more beautiful than I do now.

Before my shoot I searched the internet for maternity pictures that I would want to use as inspiration. Some of the pictures out there are just so cheesy. To me, the pictures of woman holding their boobs with their hands, or their husbands holding their boobs from behind were just NOT for me. I had a very specific vision for my shoot- calm, angelic, pure happiness... I guess to mimic how I'm feeling inside  and I feel like I accomplished that completely.

So here I wanted to share some of my maternity pictures with you and hope that you will get inspired for your next maternity shoot.

Wearing the jewelry from my wedding day

A little update on my pregnancy-
Im now just about 25 weeks pregnant and this journey has been amazing. Ive been really lucky throughout my pregnancy to not have not even 1 day of morning sickness- but I did suffer from migraines until I realized that chocolate was the causing factor. I dont have any stretch marks ( Thank god ) and to keep my skin moisturized I have been using Olive Oil, Coconut Oil and a little body butter I made myself which I will blog about in my next post. I have however gained more weight than I wanted, or thought I would have gained in my entire pregnancy ( sighs ). I did start really underweight and I truly believe my body NEEDED food my first trimester to make my pregnancy a strong one, and since my baby has had no issues I believe the extra weight was a blessing for him.
The second trimester my cravings have slowed down a lot. It went from craving bread , cheese and hearty foods- to craving fresh fruit, juice, and veggies. I couldn't workout my first trimester due to Dr's orders but once I hit 12 weeks I was allowed to. With the move to London from California and just being tired, cold, and not used to my surrounding I haven't been exercising as much as I thought I would either. Luckily, there are 6 floors in our London home so I do get a pretty good workout daily just by going up and down them- and Ive tried Prenatal Yoga but haven't stuck with it. I do go to a gym and just walk on the treadmill occasionally for 30 minutes and I have just started lifting light weights at the gym to keep my arms and legs toned, everything is starting to look really soft. The day Im going to give birth I will weigh myself and post a picture of the scale. LOL
My goal is to deliver Naturally and Id like to try to go without an epidural like my mother did.
I also plan to breastfeed for atleast a year- or pump towards the last few months.
Has anyone ever heard of Placenta pills ?!?!? Ive been going back and forth with blogging about this but I may just put it out there.
If I had to list the things I crave and eat the most in my second trimester, it would be-
-Fresh cut mango
- Unhomogenized Milk
-Scrambled eggs with cheese
-Kiwi
-Oatmeal with honey

Ill do another post soon on my favorite products that I have been using as well as Whats on my baby registry. Anything you would like to know or for me to discuss please leave me a comment.

Supporting My Friends !!!

I have so many amazing friends doing so many amazing things I just wanted to take the time to share them with you.

My good friend Christie is a teacher for a New York school with 24 fifth graders. Through donors choose.org,  Anyone is  able to give back to these children and help their school and learning experience be a great one.
I wanted to share with you Christie's technology and book project  for her students and hope that you would help her complete her projects to give these children in school computers and books to both learn and play with.

From Christie:
"Do you remember how awesome it was to use a computer in elementary school?

My students attend a public school in New York. The class is made up of 24 fifth graders who truly enjoy learning. They are enthusiastic about learning new things and working together to help one another comprehend and achieve to their highest potential.
My Project: I am requesting two MacBook Air laptops for our classroom. These two laptops will change the course of the school year and allow my students to use these fantastic resources of technology to expand their learning. They will be able to use the laptops in small groups to research, as well as type their edited pieces of writing to publish them.
These laptops will be used daily to enhance my teaching and my students' learning. I will be able to use these two laptops for many years to come as well. These two computers will be used by over 100 children who will benefit tremendously from them."

I just supported Mrs. L's classroom project: Laptops For Our Classroom! If you chip in to help her classroom reach its goal, we'll see the impact through photos, thank-you notes, and a cost report showing how every penny was spent.

Mrs. Luciano is using DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that makes it easy to help classrooms in need.

To help Mrs. L reach her goal for her 5th grade classroom please click the link below.

And right now they have a 1 for 1 offer going on. For every dollar you donate they will match it  up to $500 !
Wish I had known that when I made my donation, but how amazing!!!

My Gorgeous best friend and business partner for Have Faith Swimgerie- Lilly Ghalichi

My beautiful friend Lilly Ghalichi is doing it big, and as I like to say- "Go big or go home" !
Not only do we own, design and operate a swimwear line together called Have Faith Swimgerie but now Lilly has started her own business called Lilly Lashes- a luxury lash line with prices everyone can afford.

"It’s well known that Bravo Reality Star Lilly Ghalichi is obsessed with anything and everything GLAM. Her cast mates have dubbed her “ The Persian Barbie ”, and Lilly brings her #GhalichiGLAM home to millions of viewers each week via her hit reality show, The Shahs of Sunset.
While filming for Shahs, Lilly found herself disappointed with the selection of false eyelashes. The synthetic lashes were too cheap and fake looking, and the human hair lashes were either not glamorous enough, or simply unaffordable.
Lilly decided to create her own line of eyelashes made of all human hair that she could use to create the ultra glam eye looks she craved, while still keeping it natural looking. Today, Lilly Lashes can be seen on some of Hollywood’s hottest starlets, and the best part is, they’re affordable for the everyday starlet too.
If you’re a GLAM-aholic you came to the right place. Go ahead, indulge in a few pairs of Lilly Lashes and welcome to the #GhalichiGLAM experience."

Loved a look you saw of Lilly? Well on her website she has pictures posted of her out and about and lists exactly which Lilly Lash she is wearing!!!

To me, I always trust a company who's owners actually use and wear their own product!

Check out Lilly Lashes today and get familiar with the #GhalichiGlam experience

My Good Friend Joey Lasalla aka Joey Fitness for

They are for both men and woman, and I particularly like the watches because they are BIG! I love big watches. I ordered myself the grey and baby blue ( for baby niko :) and I cannot wait to receive them!

And Last but not least - Jilly and I started a
Baby Blanket & Accessory line!!!

Some of you may know Jilly from our office - Have Faith Swimgerie; she has been the manager of our company since we started. Well in July, Jilly found out she was expecting a baby. 2 months later, I found out I too was pregnant.  We are both very crafty, love to sew and since becoming pregnant our interests in a baby line of some kind has sky rocketed. So we decided to join together in our love of homemade, handmade items and start a Baby Blanket and Accessory line named after our Babies to be,

Besides designing something we're now so passionate about, the best part about this whole process is us donating a blanket for a blanket. I seriously cant wait to see the orders coming in and the pile of blankets for charity GROW!!! There is no better feeling than giving back to someone in need and we are so happy to be able to do that.

I would love to hear some of your favorite baby and child charities as we will be donating to many different charities, not always the same one.
